Unikko

Maija Isola created the Unikko pattern, an international icon of textile design, in 1964. Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, believed that the true essence of flowers could not be captured in a pattern. Because of this, Marimekko’s collections did not previously include floral designs. Maija Isola designed the Unikko pattern as an abstract interpretation rather than a photorealistic reproduction of the floral theme. Today, Unikko is a powerful symbol of joy and creativity and an essential part of Marimekko’s design identity.
