Unikko

Maija Isola created the Unikko pattern, an international icon of pattern design, in 1964. Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, thought that it was impossible to capture the true essence of flowers in a pattern. Therefore, flowers were not included in Marimekko’s collections until then. Maija Isola designed the Unikko pattern as an abstract interpretation rather than a photorealistic reproduction of a floral theme. Today, Unikko is a strong symbol of joy and creativity and an important part of Marimekko’s design identity.
