See all Happy Work giftsDescription
Artek’s pendant lamp A330S, also known as Kultakello or Golden Bell, was originally designed for the famous restaurant Savoy in 1937. The elegant A330S lamp combines Aalto’s typical controlled design language with light filtering through the lamp. The A330S lamp, made of a single sheet of steel, has a shiny chrome exterior, and its white interior creates a clean, pleasant light around it.
Lighting design was a central part of Alvar Aalto’s work – for him lighting and lamps played an important part in architecture. The lamps were part of a whole that Aalto wanted to control, down to the smallest details. Many of the lamps designed by Aalto have their origin in the design project of a certain building.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. Aalto graduated as an architect from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1921. One of Aalto’s most famous works is the Paimio sanatorium, a hospital designed for the treatment of tuberculosis patients. Aalto designed the entire Paimio sanatorium, including furniture and lighting, and this project was also the beginning of his career as a furniture designer. Aalto’s other famous works include the Vyborg Library, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré and the Finnish pavilions for the Paris (1937) and New York (1939) world exhibitions.
