The Story Behind the Pattern
Unikko
Maija Isola created the Unikko pattern, an international icon of design, in 1964. Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, believed that the true essence of flowers couldn’t be captured in a pattern. For this reason, flowers were not initially part of Marimekko’s collections. Instead, Maija Isola designed the Unikko pattern as an abstract interpretation rather than a photorealistic reproduction of the floral theme. Today, Unikko stands as a powerful symbol of joy and creativity and remains a key part of Marimekko’s design identity.
The Unikko-patterned Oiva mug is made from white ceramic, which is dishwasher, oven, microwave, and freezer safe.
Please remove the product sticker from the bottom of the dish before use, as it contains metal.
Symbolizing creativity and courage, Unikko was created at a time when flowers were not typically included in Marimekko’s pattern world. However, Maija Isola was intrigued by floral motifs and decided to design an entire series of bold, new floral patterns.
